Firefox verschlingt RAM

Mi 18.08.2010 15:27

Mit tausenden Plugins und reichlich geöffneten Tabs, kann Firefox zum RAM-Krümelmonster werden. Recherchen ergaben, das folgende Einstellungen Abhilfe schaffen

  1. about:config
  2. browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers 0 setzen

Half bei mir deutlich.

htcacheclean als daemon starten

htcacheclean -d30 -n -t -p/tmp/cache -l100M -i

prüft aller 30min und beschränkt die maximale Größe auf 100M

Thunderbird fragt nach Update auf 3.xxx nach Masterpasswort

Extras >> Fehlerkonsole >>
Code: openDialog('chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul') >> Evaluieren

P.S: natürlich muss man dann alle anderen Passwörter nochmal eingeben - die weiß man ja aber, oder?

Use Thunderbird more efficient to organize your tasks and projects

After using the python based issue tracker Roundup for a while I decided to review our current setup which manages projects and get things done. With our customers we have many conversations about software features, enhancements, bugs and other topics. These are in different states - some are urgent, one is only an idea which should not be lost in forthcoming development, some are desired features for next releases. Using a bugtracker became more and more a misleading approach, since not all of this issues are bugs. A second shortcoming is the need to sync with an external bugtracker via scripts that sending each day a reminder of 'open bugs' or rss-feeds or other techniques to connect with the tracker.

So I took a beer and started rethinking how software can support us to get things done. Since all conversations are instanciated via mail I choosed the mailclient Thunderbird as the main software to organize all. Since an IMAP-Account is accessible for all team members you could set up one per project.

Thunderbird with calendar plugin lightning already does mostly what you expect from a task planning software. One can create tasks and events (a.k.a milestones) directly from an incoming mail. The only missing feature: when a mail is converted to a task or event, the connection to the thread of mails gets lost. So I patched lightning to store the link to the initial mail ans an attachment. Than I patched the plugin Thunderlink to open the stored links in the mail pane (it was working already - but there was the need to create a new mimetype definition for that and starting Thunderbird with a comandline flag - I just simplyfied this).

Assigning tasks to team members works also straight forward: each one has a dedicated calendar served by CalDav-Server Radicale. So I can assign a task easily by choosing the calendar of the team member.
